As with many games of the ID@Xbox program, Feist was previously released in Steam in 2015 and after making a good impression on the community and even earning awards such as Unity Award's Best Overall Game and Unity Award's Best Visual Design, the developers from Bits & Beast brought this game to Xbox One.
One of the first things I took notice of when going over Feist was the beautiful art style. While it may be a bit simplistic when it comes to individual characters or objects in the environment, the combination of colours and shading really compliment each other when you look at the big picture. The game has a dark silhouette art style, the shadow creatures that venture the forest make for a somewhat scary experience and really drew me more into the game.
You start off trapped in a box hanging from a tree, as you swing the box to free yourself by breaking it on a tree you immediately are thrown into the mysterious adventure that awaits you. As you venture more into the dark and scary environment you slowly start to discover the creatures that roam this forest. Feist is not too vastly different when it comes to other platformers, when I say this I mean the gameplay isn't too complex or hard to figure out on your own if you played many games of this genre.
Gameplay of Feist is more or less get from point A to B while avoiding the hazards that come into play. Now where Feist differs itself is the fact you can use these hazards to your advantage. For instance with enough practice you can learn to actually have the enemy's hit each other, or you can use them to reach your point B. As you traverse this forest you will come across weapons to help you in your quest for freedom. Even the enemies themselves can be used as weapons, I found this stinging fly type creature I was able to stun then pick up and use against more enemies, but it can be destroyed rather easy if you are not careful. Overall though gameplay is more or less survival based and really will drive you to perfect you play through. At first you will die easily, but as your progress and learn more you will find the game really isn't that hard as it first may have seemed. Learning really is the name of the game here, you will find everything can be used to you advantage, even the bosses. They seemed almost impossible at first but I discover you can plan out their attacks to have them damage the other enemies around you. After all, you are in the animalistic world, where it is a sorta dog eat dog, or every man for himself situation if you know what I mean.
Music wise the game has a good soundtrack, every environment has a unique background track to go with it and definitely was easy on the ears. The entire soundtrack was produced by Tomek Kolczynski and beautiful done if I might add.
When it comes to the achievements the developers provided us with a list of achievements that will make any completionist a master of this game, you have your basic achievements, complete a certain level, hit a certain enemy with a object etc. but where it gets challenging is with the speed run and no death runs, which if you are skilled enough you can combine together, but luckily there is a level select option from the main menu so you can practice a level as much as needed. The game has a total of 40 achievements worth a total of 1000 Gamerscore.
Overall Feist definitely has earned the attention and awards it previously received on Steam, and now with the ID@Xbox program, console gamers around the world have a opportunity to Feist their eyes on this gem(pun intended). Beautiful art style, challenging gameplay, good music and unique combat have earned this game a lot of respect and a score of 8/10 from us here at the site. I highly recommend picking this game up. Whether for some weekend fun or even a game for the kids.
8/10
